Eric Pritchard and Metis provided
crucial technical assistance to
Paul Reed Smith and his fledgling PRS Guitars starting when he was
working in a third-floor walk up on West Street in Annapolis, MD. Metis
designed and manufactured virtually all of the specialized
machines and fixtures needed to manufacture world-class guitars.
Eric also assisted in the design of the guitars and has a
patent on the unique,
self-locking string tuners.
When PRS moved from manual procedures
to computer controlled machines, Pritchard consulted with PRS staff
to help develop new guitar manufacturing processes and then produced
fixture designs for the computer controlled machines. The fixture designs
were uniquely integrated with the computer control in three ways: First,
the fixtures have identification codes that are checked by the programs
to insure that the proper fixture is in the machine. Second, some of
the fixtures move or clamp under computer control. Last, since the guitars
are wood and the fixtures are metal, the system can detect errant operation
and shut down before great damage is done.
Pritchard has continued the research
and development of the technology that began in the PRS guitar amplifier.
Soon Pritchard
Amps will begin production.
